Some of you may have already encountered this previously, I just wanted to bring to everyone's attention a scam that I encountered on Instagram last night.
I received a business chat connection request from "amelia_denise_aus" purporting to be from Samsung Electronics Australia.
My curiosity took control and I connected. After the initial pleasantries, there were a couple of comments that raised my suspicion but I gave her the benefit of the doubt as they were simple enough.
Then I noticed that the language used to construct her sentences changed and it was very clear that this was the typical scam scenario
I have an information needed to be disclosed to you before now.
Have you heard about the ongoing SAMSUNG COMPENSATION PAYMENT 2023. or have any of our insurance staff agent informed you about your winnings prize and the ongoing Samsung promotion 2023
No I haven't, tell me what this is all about please.
SAMSUNG COMPENSATION PAYMENT 2023 what I'm trying to say here is that your Instagram account has been selected by our involuntary random promotion machine.
Ok so please tell me what I have to do.
I'm pleased to apprise you of the release of the recent result held by SAMSUNG MULTINATIONAL CONGLOMERATES IN CASH PROMOTION to encourage the Utilization of SAMSUNG products.
Congratulations mate your account has been selected by an Automatic Random machine which your profile emerge as the 7th winner of the ongoing SAMSUNG who won the sum of one million dollars (1,000,000 usd)
Oh wow that's a huge amount of money. I'm really amazed. So what do I have to do?
Do you have WhatsApp or Google chat on your Mobile phone?
I'll need your WhatsApp contact so I can link you up with my senior manager
Now having had first hand experience with the good folks at Samsung Loyalty, I know that this isn't the way they contact you, especially to a honeypot Instagram account that is in no way connected to my real account or my Samsung account.
I've reported the conversation to Instagram but they'll most likely come back and say that it meets community standards and nothing will be done about it as they usually do!
