Samsung's One UI 8, based on Android 16, introduces updates to memory management, particularly with the RAM Plus feature, which uses internal storage as virtual memory to enhance app performance.

RAM Plus in One UI 8

One UI 8 increases the RAM Plus virtual memory limit beyond the previous 8GB cap.

A new 12GB option is available on devices like the Galaxy Z Flip 6/7, but this is likely limited to devices with more than 8GB of physical RAM.

Memory

🥹 Devices with 8GB or less physical RAM may not support the 12GB RAM Plus option.

Samsung Users can find the RAM Plus feature continued in One UI 8 via Settings > Device Care > Memory > RAM Plus, where you can toggle it Off or On, even select virtual memory amounts (e.g., 2GB, 4GB, 6GB, 8GB, or 12GB, depending on the device).

RAM Plus

🥹 Disabling RAM Plus can free up insufficient storage and potentially improve performance on the device in some cases.

️ I recommend one keep it on, adding to the 8GB or 12GB of physical memory, minus 1GB reserved for core services.

🥰 The feature aims to allow more apps to run in the background, improving multitasking (keeps things running smoothly).

Device Eligibility

One UI 8, with its RAM Plus enhancements, is available on devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Z Flip 7, Z Flip 7 FE, Galaxy S25 series, S24 series, S23 series, S22 series, Z Fold/Flip 6/5/4, Tab S10/S9/S8, and select A-series models like the A55 and A56.

🥹 The Galaxy S21 series may not be eligible, due to Samsung’s software support window, but the S21 FE is included.

Memory Management Improvements

🥰 One UI 8 focuses on smoother animations and app design tweaks, which may leverage Galaxy AI for better RAM management.

The ability to customise virtual memory remains a key feature, allowing users to balance storage and performance based on their needs.

Thank you. 🙏

I found out years ago that using ram plus not only uses storage, but it stacks up in a hidden cache. After lots of use you have gb's of lost storage. Plus its not real ram and doesn't work as such. Best off using the ram the phone comes with as standard. For most purposes you don't need more. As technology advances and more ram is required phones are developed with a larger and more sufficient ram inbuilt.

Yeh - a very niche use case (I personally switch mine off)

Try out on the Fold 7 you purchased, as a student, when it eventually arrives.

Samsung Z Flip 7 has no issue.

It was already on by default - so I just switched it off lol.

I'm ok with the hardware 12GB for now, widget shows I never go beyond 7GB 🙏1753923409013.jpg

On average, 7GB of RAM is balance, but demanding tasks like gaming, programming, or design require more RAM, to avoid performance issues from background apps consuming resources use RAM Plus.

I haven't encountered those issues as of yet - but will renable if I do. Thanks for the advice 🙏

Memory Plus prioritises background app optimisation, efficiently utilising Physical memory in the foreground.

512GB storage is ample; 256GB is sufficient.

That's a really sharp observation. The distinction you're making between "might happen" and "will happen" gets to the core of how we manage anxiety and make decisions.

Modern PCs no longer drain system memory, due to inefficient memory management in the battle of workload Vs. memory use.

Current, Modular device systems are highly optimised to.

You may lose up to 12GB of storage, based on allocation, which is refreshed as needed.

AI optimisation, maintains performance.

Disable it, if storage issues arise, rather than overloading physical RAM now, which could leave only 2GB or less of 12GB, potentially causing problems.

Thank you.
