I just purchased an S23 Ultra.. and compared to my previous Xiaomi 11 Ultra, the S23 requires a very specific position to unlock by face. With the Xiaomi.. I barely have to point the phone to my face and it unlocks, even at different angles.

maybe allowing more photos at different angles to map our faces efficiently? Like with the finger print.

Paying $2000 for a flagship phone..I hope this improves.

The S23 Ultra just comes with 2D face unlock. Its specialty is fingerprint unlock, and face unlock is just there as a bonus method of unlocking

I would assume the finger print sensor will be 3D as per S21 Ultra

fingerprint is 3D, face unlock is 2D.

Regardless of its intended use, it should work more often than not. Ideally, it should work every single time like an iPhone does. However, it hardly ever seems to work at all.

iPhone has like 5 more sensors to get 3D face ID to work. that's why they have the dynamic island. Samsung didn't include those sensors as they want fingerprint to be their primary auth method

I don't have the s23 ultra yet, but all my other phones have unlocked using my face very easily and quickly.

There is an option to improve face recognition in there, maybe try that.

I'm facing the same problem with my s23 ultra

especially outdoor at night

it seems that the street yellow light block the face recognition

this is disappointing

Oh brother, I'm not alone. I have the S23Ultra for a week after trading in my Note9. What a disappointment.  I feel like I gave up flagship with all the toppings, MFT iris scan, and rear fingerprint scanner to get a flagship camera with much fewer "phone" features.  Yes, the camera is very nice, and playing with the tele is fun for a while, but even the night shot function seems to be poorer than my Note9.  The lack of an iris scanner means one can ONLY use a fingerprint to open the Samsung Pass and I can say that this new fingerprint scanner is wretched. Simply wretched. I have spent hours attempting to add fingerprints while getting "press harder" and "be sure to cover the entire scanner" popups all the while my finger was smashing the sensor.  And for the "face unlock", I have added/removed/readded my face and it still fails 80% of the time.  For now, I have to enter my password most of the time.  Wow, a new flagship phone :(.   Seriously considering returning it.

Me to, I've had 1 iPhone to my, I don't know how many androids/Samsung but I'm thinking going to back to I phone equivalent because phone user's have to use so many passwords and pins we are sick of it with the technology we have today. I had an iPhone 11 pro max and I'm thinking of getting an iPhone pro 14 max like my wife did. The facial was flawless on my iphone11.
