Google Assistant only replies through phone no Bluetooth devices

Can anyone please help me with a Google assistant Bluetooth problem that's driving me nutty? The assistant works fine but it just refuses to reply through any Bluetooth speaker and in the car it only responds through the phone. 
I have microphone turned on all speakers but that doesn't seem to help. 
I get on the shower with music playing and guaranteed something interrupts it so I say hey Google and the beep signalling connection comes through the speaker but after I give my instruction the assistants answer comes through the phone and of course there's always some bs reason why I can't just resume Spotify but I can't hear what that reason is. I asked the assistant to respond through the speaker but from what I saw after getting out of the shower it didn't understand that phrase!! 
If no fix available is it worth switching to Samsung AI? I tried it when it first appeared on my phone but it didn't have permission to do anything and when I tried to give verbal permission it didn't work... Was worth a try! 😂

Hey @ClareH ,

Are the devices that you have connected smart speakers/devices? The "Hey Google" or voice activation feature may not be enabled on those specific devices and therefore is only responding to you through your phone.

If your speakers are smart devices that support the "Hey Google"/voice activation function, you can check your settings to make sure that "Hey Google" and "Voice Match" are toggled on for all the devices you would like to use with voice commands.

The assistant responds but it comes through the phone and when I say hey Google the beep that indicates Google assistant is connected comes through the speaker but the answer doesn't. Plus Google Assistant was around before smart devices so I don't think that is in fact the case and if you look at the Google Assistant help article it doesn't mention only working through smart devices.
Ok so it turns out Samsung phone decided to put the app in deep sleep and remove all permissions including microphone despite the fact I use assistant everyday! I've moved it to the never auto sleep category now. Thanks for your help and sorry for not checking that first! 😬🤭
