Galaxy SHi @JoseyP, where are your contacts currently saved? If they are being jumbled on you and your husbands phone, it is likely they are being stored in your shared email address.
To avoid this, I would recommend going to your device Settings > Accounts and backup (This may appear as "Accounts & Sync", "Data Synchronization", or "Cloud and Accounts" depending which model you own) > Your shared email account > Sync > Toggle off contacts.
Note: If your contacts have been saved to this account, toggling this off may hide the contacts.
You can check where your contacts are saved by going to the Contacts app > ≡ > Text in bubble icon with the number of contacts.
Hope this helps!
