I got a new S23+ yesterday. I want it to ask for a password on startup. How do I activate this important security function? Threads seem to suggest there was an old setting under the Screen Lock Settings. Doesn't seem to be there. This critical security function must be able to be activated another way? I don't want to enter a password everytime my screen locks. Just when my phone turns on. Asking for a code once/24 hrs would be an acceptable compromise.

Go to Settings, scroll to Security and Privacy., Security, Biometrics. Review the options pin, face, fingerprints, swipe. Choose at least two, probably avoiding Face as I have trouble with it.

Elsewhere you can also find open without security in a particular location (home). Tends to be a problem when in your pocket at home. Also Motions, open or close by double tap. Avoid the open option because movement in your pocket will open it with accidental activity. E.g. dial triple 0 - really, luckily it didn't hir send. So, lots of options.

I would use password with biometrics fingerprint. Generally only need to use password on restart or if fingerprint fails. It might be your best option.

@ScottD, I would really like to encourage you to reconsider your approach here. The first thing to point out is that Secure Startup is part of the legacy Full Disk Encryption (FDE) mechanism that encrypts data on your device using a single primary key. This approach was replaced with File Based Encryption (FBE) which offers additional security and flexibility. The following article will give you more details on this:

If you are trying to reduce friction in everyday device usage, consider using Extend Unlock (under Settings/Lock Screen). It uses on body detection, device connections and trusted locations to keep your device unlocked.
Separate to the above, you can also increase the default time-out value for the lock screen. See Settings/Lock Screen/Secure lock settings.

Compared to not setting a screen lock at all, the above options will improve the security of your device while still reducing the number of times you have to unlock/re-authenticate.
