S24 plus has ultra wide band and when I was looking at reviews before there should be a way for it to actually show an arrow pointing to the direction of the tag.
My smart tags 2 have just arrived and while there is a setting to say I'm getting closer or further away there does not seem to be any arrow or ar view that I saw in reviews?

The Arrow View or AR (Augmented Reality) View you're referring to is likely tied to the Ultra-Wideband (UWB) functionality, which provides precise directional guidance.
This feature requires a UWB-compatible Samsung Galaxy phone, such as the Galaxy S23 Ultra, S24 series, or Z Fold/Flip models with UWB support.

To confirm, check if your phone supports UWB by reviewing its specs or testing the SmartTag 2 in the SmartThings app.
Open the app, select your SmartTag 2, and look for a Compass View option or an AR-like interface when using Search Nearby.
If these options are absent, your phone may not support UWB, limiting the experience to Bluetooth-based tracking.
