I have an A14 and whenever I receive a notification my phone makes a sound, but the screen doesn’t turn on and display the notification. Only when I unlock my phone can I see the notification. I’ve tried turning double tap to wake off and that didn’t make a difference. Is there a setting that I may have selected that I’ve forgotten that I can re-enable so my screen turns on when I get notifications?

I wonder if it's a limitation on this particular phone

That would be really disappointing.

Bearing in mind I have a totally different phone
1. Results of a Google search
https://www.google.com.au/search?q=samsung+a14+notifications+not+showing+when+off+screen&client=ms-o...
2. Try going to Settings and actually searching for notifications, not going to Notifications. You will get a number of different options, go to Lock screen notifications. Find Lock screen on. Put your finģer on this and hold until it opens. Explore options there.
Sadly that is the limit of suggestions I feel able to make. If you resolve the problem I would be pleased to know.

When following #1 my settings were ok.
#2 when I put my finger on the lock screen button it doesn't do anything until I lift my finger and it just switches that button off or on.
This is my lock screen notifications settings Screenshot_20231020_142925_Settings.jpg
