I am an amateur but I will try. My assumption is that the VPN creates a second network which doesn-t feed back to your s24u. I am suggesting this because I have a printer that won't connect when the VPN is turned on. It would take moments to fix but i am ridiculously lazy so I just turn the VPN off when printing.
In my case the solution is incredibly easy. My VPN settings allow me to exclude any ip address that I choose to by-pass the VPN. So all you need to do is check your VPN software to see if it has settings that allow by-passing, identify the Android Auto ip setting, or just the url? and enter it in the VPN.
