A commentary of a recent problem I  encountered in Australia,  with a possible answer from my Canadian electronics engineer friend;

Dan, It's 10.PM, &I am just about to nod off, when I thought of your expertise might help me understand an exp...

I have a 4 month old Samsung Galaxy Flip 6, new out this year.
A week ago when I was out for lunch, I found the phone completely dead,  which surprised me as I had it fully changed in the morning.
Anyway, I assumed that it was the battery having a fit, but when I plugged it in an hour later, nothing at all showed up on the screen, so I left it on charge for an hour, read Samsung's advice on override starting,  nothing was happening, phone was stone dead, and Christmas was 2 days away.
First I Googled the problem, but no joy there, I couldn't phone Samsung because I had no other phone,  so I ended up on a chat line with Samsung, and after a multitude of stupid questions, they couldn't get an answer, said that I would have to return the phone to a service centre, nearest one being in Sydney!
After all my cursing and swearing stopped,  I remembered that I still had an old phone,  so I got it up and running.
Over the last few days, I tried several times to get the bad phone running, but it was still totally dead.
Anyway, I am at my desk today, working out what would be the best day to get the train to Sydney, and out of idle curiosity, I plugged it in again, and was stunned to see the charge light come on, telling me that there was zero power in the battery.
I could not believe my eyes,  but after an hour on charge,  by 3pm, the phone was back running again.
So I am watching to see how things progress, and I have used it quite a bit, using to write this actually, and all good so far.
But I am totally mystified what happened, all my years owning phones, and I have never experienced anything like it, and am wondering if it's likely that it will happen again.
Cheers
His reply;
Interesting thing to happen to the phone but not all that uncommon.
This is what I think happens.;
The phone has a sophisticated battery monitoring system built into the CPU which is tasked with the job of alerting you to when the battery needs to recharged and some other functions. Occasionally the monitoring system of the battery gets confused and built into the software is a default that when the battery monitoring system indicates the dead battery the phone shuts off. Even when the phone is shut off the CPU within the phone is still working in the background and eventually it’s sorts out that it might’ve made a mistake reading the condition of the battery and turn the phone back on.

Hey there,

If you are still experiencing issues with your battery, please follow these steps.

  1. Open Samsung Members > tap on Get help at the bottom of the page
  2. Tap on Interactive checks > Battery. This check will tell you if there are any internal issues or deviations with your battery.
  3.  If Life or Capacity shows up blue, your battery is working at typical capacity. If you want to further improve your battery performance, you can do this through Settings> Battery and device care > Battery. Here you can change the ways that your battery is used in your device.
  4. If Life or Capacity shows up yellow, you can send an error report directly from Samsung Members. To do this, tap on Get help> scroll down to Error reports > Power/Battery/Charging. Then describe the details of your battery issue (i.e. battery draining).
  5. If Life or Capacity shows up red, we would suggest that you book an appointment with one of our Samsung Service Centres so that your device can be assessed. To find your closest service centre and book and appointment, click here: https://www.samsung.com/au/support/your-service/main

Hope this helps! :)
