Hope they fix this, allow the user to take control  of all permissions  to disable/enable

See the picture above, what so important for my file explorer to not let you disable this permission, for me this so suspicious 🤔

I think maybe this is in default for downloaded files not viewable in the Gallery app (APKs etc.)

Default or not permissions like , phone, storage , location, call logs, etc. are critical state, it should be allowed to be disable /enable for security reasons ,

For example : Facebook has 3 hidden apps in system which is not needed, and can't be disabled, but for technical ways you can forcefully, and it runs fine without the 3 hidden apps.

I tried duplicating it on my unit and yes, it looks like phone access is required for file explorer which I don't understand either, but I don't necessarily find it suspicious. However, your user experience and needs might be different from mine so maybe a call to customer service or an email to their suggestions address about permissions may help

You can disable those 3 'hidden' apps of facebook, my phone is not rootedScreenshot_20211228-173049_Settings_1305_1640683849.png

My question is, why should a File Manager app needs to have a phone access? I suggest you change your file manager, there a lots of trusted one.

I just checked my Samsung My Files and it has phone access too, idk why it needs that permission but I don't want to use 3rd party apps, so I just let it be 😆

Imagine, they won't need to ask you to look at who ever your contacts, calling, whats inside your storage, some of the built-in apps permissions to decline aren't allowed,

I've seen a tutorial on YouTube where someone attack the privacy because of some permissions is not disabled,
