Hi fbean, Please make sure the device is updated to the latest version. Clean the lens to remove any dust or debris with a soft or dry cloth. Also, please try opening the Camera application and tap on the gear icon. In the Camera settings, please scroll down until you find "Reset settings" and tap on Reset. Please try this and check if the issue got resolved.
Some time focus track gets lost when you zoom in as default view has the most ability to focus on a subject. Have you tried focusing before zoomed in and than zooming in on a subject. if this don't work, try using manual camera setting and adjusting the focus as you wish. Hope this helps.
