Hello, owner of a Gear S3 frontier for about 2 years now. I love my S3, and while I used to use it alot, I now use it mainly for (besides telling time) the fitness/health trackers, notifications from my phone, and occasionally calls/texts. However, after these years, it seems to be slowing down a bit, and getting a bit roughed up from what I've put it through.

I'm interested in upgrading to one of the new Galaxy watch models, but other than some basic research, I don't know much about them, much less from actual owners. I know that there's the new Galaxy Watch, which is the closest to the Gear S3; however, there is also the similar Active2, and the not so similar Galaxy Fit.

Can anybody tell me what the best/most notable improvements over the S3 are in these, and which one will best do the three things I listed above: track fitness, notifications, and take calls.

I upgraded from the S3 to the GW46mm. I can't say I've noticed a huge improvement. the battery life is a lot better and it'll have longer support, but my main reason for upgrading was LTE. I do miss the MST on the watch though.

The active 2 will have all the same fitness tracking as the GW, but it's a smaller profile, so that may appeal to you more.

the Galaxy Fit does not take calls AFAIK, but you will get basic notifications on it (no option to reply though).

cheers!

If you plan on sticking with Samsung phones, then yeah you can upgrade (though not necessary).  If you plan on straying from the Samsung lines of phones, get a WearOS watch.   I've learned that i lost many functions by switching to pixel.  I can no longer read through old messages and emails on my Gear Sport.  They've limited the functionality of basic apps like that specifically for Samsung devices.

I've actually had a pixel 2/3 throughout the time I've owned this smartwatch. What kind of features does a wearOS watch offer that Samsung doesn't?

wearOS allows you to have any android app available for your phone, installed on your watch. you can go through all your previous text messages and emails as you would on your phone. you can also use Google maps directly from your wrist

Galaxy watch active 2 has great performance, digital rotating bezel, 2-day battery life, also IP 68 water-resistant. The display has an ambient brightness sensor that auto-adjusts the panel’s brightness. All functions and features are very responsive as they are specifically optimized for this hardware-software combo. It’s one of the most reliable smartwatches. It gives you precise health insights when you need it, while keeping you fully connected. Whether you are out for a run, or pushing through your next deadline, the Galaxy Watch Active2 will keep you at your optimal performance inside and out. The step and distance tracking, which are the most commonly used features, were pretty accurate.
