Saving pics with .heic extension instead of jpg or png

My Galaxy A52 5G has recently started saving my pics with the .heic extension.  Can somebody tell me how or if it can be corrected.  I have sent pics to a couple of people in the last couple of days and they couldn't open them because of that extension.  Why is this happening?

First check:

Open Camera -> Settings -> Picture formats

Do you have High efficiency pictures enabled? If yes, try turn it off.

This did not work for me. It is turned off and still storing photos in HEIC. I need to turn this off. Any ideas?
