I had the fortune of visiting Venice during my trip to Italy. As Venice is full of tight corners and packed corridors, I opted to use my trusty #GalaxyS9Plus for flexible photo-taking.

The Grand Canal, which runs as a reverse “S” shaped waterway through Venice, was a sight to behold. I took this picture on the Rialto Bridge, one of the very few bridges which cross the Grand Canal. The hidden reason why there were so few bridges built is because the Grand Canal’s inherent purpose was actually to connect the two ends of Venice for commercial shipping. For this reason, the elite families of the Venetian Republic built hundreds of mansions which line the Canal to demonstrate their wealth and power. This is the reason why even today, Venice honours this tradition by limiting the number of bridges which span the Grand Canal (even now there are only 5 which cross the canal along the entire 4km length).

On an even deeper level, it is thought that the shape of the Grand Canal was dictated by a natural river which connected the two ends of Venice. Even as global warming has led to sea level rise, the shape will remain the same as it originally was. As you walk along the banks of the canal, you are effectively walking through the hidden shape of history.
