When I get a text I just want a little icon on my lock screen, or if the phone is not locked I just want a little icon to pop up.

I do not want to see any portion of the text message until I actually open the text message app itself.

How do i do this with google messages - no matter what settings I try the messaging app gives you a preview of the messages when the phone is unlocked.

Just to be clear - I want an icon to idnicate I have a new message, but I never want to see any portion of the new message contents until I open the messaging app.

Thanks, but my issue isn't just the lock screen - I do not want text message contents displayed even when the phone is unlocked unless I open the google messages app.

Go to Settings > Notifications & Search for "Messages" and Toggle Off Notifications for Google Messages.

In my Screen Shot Notifications are Toggled ON, so Yours should be to the Left for Off.

I use Google Messages and all I see on my device before opening Google Messages, is a Notification Badge on the App's Icon.
