Galaxy SNo, you don't have to drain the battery down to 10%
If it was my new device, I'd just charge it to 100% and use it normally after that.
Keep in mind that a new device will take a few days to "learn" your usage patterns.

Galaxy SHi, as adviced by RedDogRabbit you don't need to drain the battery. Please charge it to 100% as it is a new device.

Your device isn't using a Nickel Cadmium battery, it's using Lithium Ion Batteries.
Forget the old battery technology.
