You can turn on Flash notification and you can use either the flashlight or the screen flashes, these are useful as well. You can find it in accessibility and advanced settings.
Yeah - But either of those use a lot more battery - I'm using Holey Light & it's pretty d*a*m*n good as an alternative to the LED - Samsung shouldn't have left it to independent Devs to provide an ongoing notification! Even using the LEDS on the back of the device would have at least been something... There were rumours a couple of months ago that Samsung was "looking into" using the light ring around the selfie cameras for Notifications... but nothing yet... AND that's pretty bad IMHO..
