When I bought it, I knew it that it will not have a stainless steel frame. It was in a case since day 1 and I have 3 of them. The Otterbox Defender, a Samsung leather one and the Samsung silicone. Due to my job it is sitting in the Otterbox for most of the time and the other ones I'm using them in my spare time.
Few days ago when I took it out from the Defender case I was kind of shocked to see lots of micro abrasions all around the frame. Maybe they were there for a long time and I didn't pay attention, but who knows. Ok, I know that at any given time little debris can go inside the case but I didn't expect to make so much damage. For a more than $1800 phone I found this unacceptable and I'm very disappointed. Also we know that Samsung phones loose their value very fast, and now, despite that I took care of my phone I'm pretty sure that will loose even more if I'm going to sell it.

Hi eldarkhaired, We do not have tested information with the use of 3rd party accessories. It is always recommended to use Samsung approved accessories for a better experience with your Samsung device.

Hi keagan, with all of my respect on your opinion, I'm kind of skeptical that Samsung cases it would had provided a better protection when both cases what I had mentioned have a good part of the bottom missing.
My point is if Samsung is asking this kind of money for their flagship phones, they would better provide a better quality. If they want to be in the same page with Apple prices, they also have to provide the Apple hardware quality and not cutting corners.

yes I know what you mean, I 100% agree. if Samsung wants to charge as much and more then iPhone the products needs to be as good or better. I think Samsung has quality issues because #1 they are trying to build the product as cheap as they can to keep a large profit margin. #2 they make so many devices and so many price points they can't be really good at just a few devices.

From my perspective, I think you mistreated your phone a lot that even the Otterbox case couldn't protect it properly. Technically, the s20 ultra is a luxury premium phone, not a rugged phone to protect from everything.

That's exactly the point. If even the Otterbox Defender couldn't protect my phone against microscopic debris or dust than I wonder what kind of low grade aluminum Samsung was using to manufacture the phone.

Like I said lol, it's a premium phone and not a rugged phone. Even my Note 8 has a few scratches and bumps in the metql frame as I took great care to not damage it and I'm using a Spigen case that's supposed to protect it but there's still a limit to how much it can do. As you said, your phone is exposed to microscopic debris and dust, the otterbox case is not going to protect your phone 100%. If you want a phone to be as durable, you should try a rugged phone in that type of environment as it's engineered to survive in those conditions.

I agree with you and I'm not going to comment in this subject anymore. A rugged phone will do better in certain environments...but...haha...because of the human nature, when we see 2 or more products from different brands being in the same price range, we expect those products to offer a similar quality, a similar experience right? In this case, Samsung it is not offering.
Aluminum against stainless steel. What is better to have in a expensive phone? We know that stainless steel cost a little more. In a $1900 phone with tax included it wouldn't had hurt Samsung, and here I'm guessing, a $20-$40 more in the production cost.

well I'm no business man or anything but I know a few basic things about it. the thing is perhaps the stainless steel may cost about lets say $10 for easy math to the build cost. then you have to add samsung's profit margin or to compensate for the resources put in to it. so that $10 build cost quickly turns in to $50 or perhaps more to the sticker price.
