Good evening all,
I recently upgraded mine and my wife's phones from S4's to A8(2018)'s. As soon as we got them home both connected automatically to our home WiFi as the store transferred all our stuff across so I imagine passwords and remembered networks were included in that.
About two days later both phones simultaneously started not being able to connect to our Wifi, saying "Failed to obtain IP address". All our laptops, apple TV, and our old S4's still connect to our wifi without issue, but neither A8 will.
After scouring the internet for a cure and with nothing working by changing phone settings, I logged into my router and removed the security password to make it an open network and both phones immediately connected and worked fine. I then changed the encryption to WPA-PSK, with a password and both phones connect and work fine but if I change it back to WPA2-PSK, neither phone will connect, despite every other device in our home doing so. After a minute or so of trying to connect, we finally just get the "unable to obtain IP address" message and can get no further.
Any idea what the heck is going on here? It seems odd to me that several year old phones and laptops can connect to the highest security setting, yet a brand new recently released phone cannot. Well I should say that it cannot anymore, as like I said earlier, they both worked fine for a couple of days after purchase.

Interesting.
Is security on router WPA2 TKIP or AES?
Try going into WiFi settings on your phone and forget your network a reboot the router, then try connecting again.

Hi Robert,
I really have no idea if its TKIP or AES or even what than means. All I can fathom out is that both phones will connect on the lower security WPA-PSK but not on the higher security and later WPA2-PSK. They did when we first bought them, then something unknown happened to both of them at or around the same time. Meanwhile everything else in our home still connects to WPA2-PSK fine.
Tried all the usual stuff suggested like forgetting the network, rebooting the router, rebooted the phone (battery removal simulation). Absolutely nothing is making a difference. I've also reset all network settings to factory spec, with no luck.

From my technical knowledge it's because as the Mac address is static for your A8, your router is struggling to assign desired IP for the A8 as it may request the connection with a dynamic IP instead. As a result, the router fails to recognize the request and abort resulting no connection.
Do you have a very old router? This issue mostly happens between a old router and a new device.
Speaking simply, just reset the ROUTER(not reboot, RESET)as it'll clear the default mac and assign a new one.It should solve the problem. Hope I helped.

The router is an old spec I believe, I know the guy from Bell who installed it recently said it was very outdated but the only thing we could use on our line, the newer stuff won't work with the box down the end of the road apparently. So could very well be a case of conflict between very old and very new tech. Resetting the router doesn't work though, done it a hundred times now. Since the phones stopped connecting about a week and a half ago, I haven't been able to get either one to connect at all, not even once.
WiFi is a bit of a mystery to me, but would it be possible to get around this issue by plugging in my own third party router in to the back of this ancient tech Bell supplied modem/router?

Oh ohkay. So it's not static dynamic ip problem. I'll provide few more solutions, they're bound to solve it.
1) Yes, piggybacking a 3rd party router might work. It could be the current ol bell router have devices limited by Bell by default , so a 3rd party router might work as getaway to expand the network coverage as well. Try this, setup WPA2-PSK on 3rd party router and connect all devices on 3rd party router. But it it's a very complicated process, try it if you can.
2)My recommendation, disconnect and forget all of the connected devices from wifi. Make sure no devices is connected to the wifi, then setup A8 to the wifi. There's a high chance it might solve the problem , as the requested mac address by A8s might be occupied by some other device.
3)If those failed, I'll ask do you use cases/covers on A8s? if yes remove them and try. Try to remember if you did something that might've caused the problem, as it was working properly before as you mentioned.
Try them. keep us updated. best of luck

Would suggest forgetting your wireless networks on your devices, power cycle your router, and then reconnect your wireless devices using authentication that you previously set (wpa2). You should be able to reconnect after this.

have a similar problem with my a8. tried power cycling it but it don't work. did the whole forget network and reset router thing.. didn't work. I think the A8 is just setup to fluctuation when routers nearby are on similar frequencies... any other suggestion to help fix this would be nice
