I set my Note20 Ultra up as a hotspot for my S9 to connect as a client.

I've disabled metered network
I have disabled WiFi Power Saving
I have disabled randomized MAC
I have disabled Detect Suspicious Netwoks
Hotspot 2.0 is enabled
Auto Hotspot is enabled
Auto connect is enabled

The Galaxy S9 connects fine.

When the S9 looses connection due to low signal from entering a building and reconnects when signal strength is stronger, the Note20 fails to route internet traffic. The only was to restore the connection fully is to turn Hotspot off, then back on again.

I will install some basic network software later to see if it can ping the phone and if it's denying all requests, external requests or just failing to resolve domain names.

Anyone else run into this issue?

Nope, my Note20 Ultra works fine in Hotspot. I use this feature almost every couple days for my laptop.

According to what you said, signal got low once you enter building. Could this be the mobile signal turn weak so that you won't have internet? Inside building usually weaker on mobile signal because of concrete structures. But I have no problem with Rogers since they have 850 frequency. Not sure if other carriers have 850 frequency too.

the note20 stays in the car. I take the S9 in WIFI only mode with me in the building. The internet on the Note20 works fine.

How far away from your Note20 and S9? If it is too far away, your wifi signal will turn weak. Why don't you take your Note20 with you? Also leave your phone alone in your car is not safe.

update:

client MAC matches what is displayed in "connected devices" on the NOTE20.

S9 (client) can ping NOTE20 (host)
NOTE20 can ping client

S9 fails ping to external IP addresses
NOTE20 internet working fine.

Hi, Please try performing the wipe cache partition by following the instruction below and check if the issue got resolved.

Turn off the device. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby / Power key. When the Android logo displays, release both keys. An 'Installing system update' message may show briefly before the Android Recovery menu options appear. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight "Wipe cache partition". Press Bixby / Power key to select. Press the Volume down key to highlight Yes, then press the Bixby / Power key to select. When the process is complete, the Reboot system now is highlighted. Press the Bixby / Power key to restart the device.

update: April 30.

It may have to do with "WiFi Sharing".

Settings>Connecrions>Mobile hotspot and tethering>Mobile Hotspot>Configure>Advanced>WiFi Sharing.

Scenario:

Note20 initially uses LTE as the WAN port.

Note20 then uses WIFI to connect to a network, and WIFI becomes WAN redirecting the S9 LAN traffic.

Note20 looses WIFI connection, but fails to release/reset WAN state and keeps redirecting traffic to the disconnected WAN port instead of switching back to use LTE as the WAN port.

If the NOTE20 reconnects to a public/private WIFI, whether it be the same or different AP, internet traffic is re-established on the S9.

It appears as if FAILOVER isn't operating as it should.

Does that make sense?
