In Oreo there should be an assistive feature that adds virtual keys onto the display. This would remove the problems that come around when home buttons break.
This would enabled in accessibility and can be turned on or off.

Yeah that would be a good feature. The assistive menu button they have now sucks, well at least it did on my Note 3 when my buttons stopped working. It was an ugly floating grey box that just got in the way. I know that a few downloadable Launchers though offer the touch buttons as part of their UI I believe.

quick question: is there a way to know if a suggestion is actually added? Or will I just need to look closely at the changelogs?

You can kind of enable one, but it only appears when you're in one handed mode.
