Galaxy SAre you still with Telus?
I would always strongly advise people against using any Carrier based email accounts / Addresses.
Mostly because if you ever switch Carriers, you lose access to your Carrier based email account.

Galaxy SYou can have multiple Google Accounts, just use the same personal Gmail account for the Play Store & all your Google Apps, and it should be fine.

Galaxy SI've got several different Gmail accounts, none of them linked to any Carrier, and I will always have access to them, in part because they are not linked to anything that I don't control.
You can easily create a new Gmail account to use as a backup, and you can decide if you want a new Gmail account linked, or not, or just as an "in case" Recovery email account.
If you're annoyed with the Telus prompt, if it was me, I'd just remove it.
