I just got my S20 Ultra 5G directly from Samsung a couple of days ago and I have been really struggling with the Phone app.

Whenever I receive a call, it freezes. I have to answer from my watch or earphones. When I touch the screen, it says the app crashed.

I used to be able to make outgoing calls without an issue but now it's freezing as well.

I tried booting phone in safe mode, clearing data/cache on the phone app, wiping cache partition and nothing worked.

I have tried to factory reset my phone and it seemed to work for a bit. Then a reinstalled all my apps and now it's freezing again.

Did anyone else encounter this issue? Before I do another factory reset, I want to make sure it's not just me.

I don't think I've downloaded an app that's causing that issue. Everything used to work fine on my Note 10 plus with the same exact apps...

Please comment and help!

********* UPDATE *********

Thanks everyone for replying and trying to help me resolve my issue. You guys rock! So I have decided to factory reset my phone again and after a few hours of trying to install and testing to call myself, I finally found the issue!

Compared to the older phones, the S20 has a new app called AR zone where they put all the AR stuff together. But the issue is in both AR emoji and Deco pic.

Here's the breakdown:

1 - AR emoji: Back then, to have all the different clothes and styles or whatever, you had to download the extra ones in the galaxy store. But now, everything is already included. The issue is that they are still available to download in the galaxy store like you don't have them. So downloading them would cause things to be doubled and I guess the coding or something in the background causes the conflict and made my phone run with errors.

2 - Deco pic: This app is now for all the funny stickers that you wanna put on when you take pics. My daughter loves this so I wanted to download a few sticker packs for her and that's when I noticed the freeze and crash. I left everything stock and everything worked fine. I downloaded one sticker pack and everything started freezing and crashing.

So I think these 2 apps are just not refined yet to work properly or are still in their early stage. It's super weird since these apps have absolutely NOTHING to do with the phone/dialer.

But I stayed away from those 2 apps and installed everything else and all works like a charm. Just wanted to keep yallz in the loop.

Thanks again!

if still not resolve . its a firmware problem . but try to do factory reset the phone . or wait until the next firmware update . i heard that the auto focus on s20 series are terrible . but they will start rolling out the new firmware update soon

the camera is not all that bad. it's true that it takes a bit of time for the auto focus to work well. but it doesn't bother me as much. and yeah, they should roll out an update soon (hopefully). but that's why I was wondering if it's just me or everyone. if it's everyone, then yeah firmware problem. if it's just me, then I just did something wrong or have a defect I'll need to check with Samsung.

Reset and run your phone native for as long as you can. No apps period. Just plain jane. I cannot see that Samsung would release a device with a faulty essential PHONE application. Also just for fun, turn off your WIFI and note the behavior.

Long shot. New phone. New SIM. Cant hurt. I just recently resolved many of my voice call issues and 4G/3G issues by replacing my SIM that I had since my S5 days and I am on a S9+. Again, a bit of a long shot, but you dont know until you try 😉

i am pretty sure that its a firmware issue not the hardware . if all the button . screen touch speaker camera etc are working properly . the its not a hardware defect . no worries its only a firmware issue .

Like I said yesterday in another post who was complaining because he didn't received is new phone on date, I never preorder my phones, I always wait till it gets in stores and even a few months after it's out, so the bugs are corrected. Perhaps, in many cases I get a better rebate on the phone instead of getting a gadget that I don't really need, like the ear buds: value of 200$ retail but probably cost only 25$ to manufacture...

You did say that after you Factory Reset - Your device was functioning properly - until you installed the apps you had on your previous device... correct?
This would suggest that you have an app on your new device that is incompatible - But the puzzle is that you said you experienced the same issue in Safe Mode - Which suggests that it's not a user installed app - Try another Factory Reset - But this time - Don't install any apps that may be related to the UI - Contacts - or Dialer - See if you continue to have the issue.
