Hello forum,

For reference I am on a Samsung Galaxy s24 UI 8.0.

As of the timing of this post, I am unable to make calls through the hey Google command which always has been my method and has previously worked without incident.

Upon asking hey Google to make a call I receive one of the three responses: either it will tell me quote I cannot make calls or quote I am an AI and cannot make calls or quote I am an AI and cannot make calls you will have to call so and so yourself. I am writing so-and-so as a placeholder for the name I requested to call.

I have gone into both the Google app through settings as well as the Gemini app through settings and I could see my microphone and phone contacts are allowed so I haven't changed anything there, then I also proceeded to wipe the cache from both and restart my phone yet I continue to have the same issue.

Is Samsung aware of this issue or is anybody else experiencing this today? Any ideas on how to fix it?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for letting me know it might just be a bug then. It was working fine the day before.

I don't use Google Gemini, and Google Assistant doesn't have any issues with: Hey Google, call xxxx

Switch back to Google Assistant if you're currently using Gemini, see if that works for you.

You could also try Clearing BOTH Cache & Data for Google Assistant, set it up again and test.

Thanks for always being so helpful with everybody. I truly appreciate your posts and your knowledge and have learned a lot just from reading your responses to both myself and toward other users.

When I use Google Assistant, does that mean I won't have access to Gemini AI for things like creating images Etc? Would I have to toggle them back on and off to utilize those features that I enjoy?

Also how do I switch to Google Assistant?

Sorry for all the questions it's hard for me to keep track with how fast technology is advancing.

Oh it's actually working now but I am going to switch to seamless Google Assistant I just asked AI how to do that and you're correct even the response I got said it will be more seamless with Google Assistant.

Again very many thanks you are such an invaluable person in this forum and I appreciate your responses and your presence here!

From now on, if I have issues I will just toggle between the two because I do like to create a i art with Gemini.

Thanks again!

Hi resung80,

We acknowledge your concern regarding the inability to make calls using the “Hey Google” command on your Galaxy S24 running One UI 8.0. As you have noted, this functionality previously worked without incident, but you are now receiving responses such as “I cannot make calls” or “I am an AI and cannot make calls” when attempting to initiate a call.

You have already confirmed that microphone and contact permissions are enabled in both the Google app and the Gemini app, and you have cleared the cache and restarted the device without resolution. Please try with the below alternative steps once.

  1. Check Default Assistant Settings

    • Navigate to Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Digital Assistant App and confirm that Google Assistant is set as the default.

  2. Verify Calling Permissions

    • Open the Google Assistant settings and ensure that “Calls & Messages” permissions are enabled.

    • Confirm that “Voice & Video Calls” is linked to your phone app.

  3. Update Apps

    • Ensure both the Google app and Gemini app are updated to the latest versions via the Play Store.

  4. Re‑sync Contacts

    • Go to Settings > Accounts and Backup > Manage Accounts and re‑sync your Google account to refresh the contact list.

  5. Test in Safe Mode

    • Boot the device into Safe Mode to rule out third‑party app conflicts. If the issue does not occur in Safe Mode, a recently installed app may be interfering.

  6. Report to Google Support

    • Since the responses indicate a change in Google Assistant’s calling functionality, this may be related to recent updates in Google’s services. We recommend reporting the issue directly through the Google app > Settings > Help & Feedback.

And that’s wonderful to hear that it’s working again! 🎉 Switching to Google Assistant for calling makes sense if you want a more seamless experience, and it’s great that you’ve found a balance by toggling between Assistant and Gemini depending on your needs.

Your appreciation means a lot—thank you for the kind words. It’s exactly this kind of thoughtful feedback and sharing that makes forums valuable for everyone. Enjoy creating with Gemini and the smooth functionality of Google Assistant.
