I have a dodge with uconnect, which works perfectly with iPhones. I have just got an S8 and the car displays 'USB error' when I plug in.

I have tried changing the USB mode, there doesn't seem to be a firmware update for the car, I've tried the official and third party cables. Unfortunately I don't have Bluetooth in the car.

Any suggestions for anything else I could try, or am I hooped?

Did you tried Android Auto from Google? it's available in Google play store. If not give it a try.

When you connect to usb your phone should give you option how you wish to connect your phone eg. For media or photos or just charging, etc. See if it's selected on media(drag down menu while connnected and you'll see usb options in there. I believe it should be on media. ) also consider that you have to allow permission when connecting usb for first time. If all that doesn't work, contact car manufacturer and ask if there is an update you should expect from them.

have a 2014 Ram 1500 with Uconnect never had a problem S4 S5 S8 just connect straight through Bluetooth and USB that sounds like a weird problem but I'm kind of a stereo guy so I don't use the garbage the cars come with anyhow LOL a good Alpine or pioneer navigation 7 inch screen you'd be better off plus the Pioneer plays Flac files a lot better than MP3 plus you can get a converter on your computer to convert mp3 to FLAC files but that can get expensive for the decks I mean they can run anywhere from 8 to 1500.
