Galaxy SHi, Archiving a message generally does not mark it as read for the sender.
Archiving is more about organizing your messages and moving them out of the main inbox without indicating whether you've read the message or not.
However, specific messaging platforms and email clients may have variations in how they handle these actions, so it's a good idea to check the features of the particular service you're using to be certain.

Galaxy SYou could ask someone who you want to receive messages from, to send you a message, and tell them you want to test something & will temporarily block them.
Get them to send you a message, archive it, and ask them if they saw you read it or not.
That's the most obvious & easiest way.
