8-bit vs. 10-bit directly impacts banding, that's just how technicaly how it works - more colors - less banding visible.
With 8-bit panels, they use dethering technique to improve those banding issues, but what it does is simply messing up those colors they cannot reproduce properly, but it adds just more noise and inaccuracy in colors reproduction.

I don't know about all people noticing it, but I do, and there are lots of people on Reddit too.
I expect the best technologies in display from a flagship phone for $1300. Especially from Samsung - leaders in displays.

Lots of competition already use 10-bit panels from 2020 already, like OnePlus, for instance, which less expensive phone, but provides better technologies.

My TCL TV for $500 has a 10-bit panel.

Thanks for letting me know.

Mentioning the TV doesn't help much as it's a much larger canvas to notice vs a small 6-6.4" screen.

Indeed 1 would expect Samsung to showcase their top display tech in their phones, however unlike Sony they'll sell their tech for a much wider revenue and profit business sense to more customers some as exclusively for a short term before they themselves have access: Sony, Apple, etc. That's just proper business sense. Then when economies of scale reach peak profitable scale THEN they'll implement.

Considering the large scale of Tv's, monitors phone models produced and shipped globally and add their customers which compete in all markets across all products then this is why they have $62 Billion in cash and liquidable assets for so many years ;)

Still 10-bit seems to have reached that scale.

My intention when mentioning TV was to emphasize that the technology is already widespread and in less expensive devices (with much large canvas).
And banding is visible on large screens as well, including TV.

I do understand their side of the business, but to tell the truth, it doesn't matter to me as a customer, as I'm paying a ton of money to receive the best, not outdated.
Actually, it makes it even worse, showing that Samsung wants to keep a higher margin on their products at the expense of their customers, which is 180 degree from earning loyalty.

And the competition already shows the technology available on the market - this is the strongest point in support of the thesis that being a global leader in displays, Samsung fails to deliver the best technologies to their users in their flagship devices (as a user, I don't care about their internal kitchen whether they want ot increase their profit margin, it shouldn't be at the expense of users).

I am being their loyal customer for around 8 years, since S8 - first fully immersive screen - loved that phone, then Note 10 Plus - GOAT, brilliant screen, the best phone ever imho, which I've changed to S24 Ultra expecting to receive more for a 5-years newer phone, but getting actually worse experience. And at this point, the screen is one of the most important things in phones, as 99% of interactions happening through the screen.
And I own many other their devices.
I chose Samsung over Apple and other competitors for bringing innovations and breakthroughs to users.
And now they kinda turning into Apple, and that's a thing I don't like - growing their business at the expense of customers.

In any way, that's my humble opinion 😌
But the fact remains the same - 10-bit (or maybe 12-bit 😁) panels to flagship devices is a must nowadays.

As a customer you should ALWAYS be concerned as how a business is run: makes better sense and more bang for your dollar - such as investing in stocks (course of a year/2 that alone pays for your uograde).

I understand the issue of markup for lesser top tier parts, and the screen isn't the only afront but the cameras as well.

The competition are conglomerates heavily funded by the CCCP so they can spare no expense. It's nice to see the push by competition yet remember they don't produce, ship as many, and global support (a hallmark of Samsung brand for customer loyalty) is something you're heavily forgetting.

That said I'm expecting big things in 2025 from Samsung along with Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 to bring overall value to money we spend.

It's a good thing pre-orders do not enforce deposits held before announcement. Right now we're going by rumors that have yet to be fully vetted despite leaker/insider details, as nothing yet is guaranteed and the full spectrum list never gets released by such sources. So we wait until the event(s) and product launch. At the end of the day we vote with our dollars(!) And when sales significantly drop several quarters in a row, and pricing traditionally drops - except from the fruit company, over the life span of the product, heads will role and pR department will heavily engage the public regarding how the product failed and major adjustments will occur on the next cycle. Therein lies the rub and the power of the consumer in competition ;)

PS: I'd rather Oppo go global and dump the OnePlus brand cause at launch of the Open clearly their staff had no preparation nor clue of the product. The brand is useless in North America at this point theie only contribution was the notification action slider.

Great conversation I enjoyed this.

Let's not talk about investments under this topic 🙂

My points are solely from a customers perspective: what I expect when I'm paying and what I really get.
