Currently the only way to remove what the User may/does consider "crap" & to maybe cut down on the spread of more in the form of viruses/malware, follow the principle idea of Android being customizable.
ALLOW US (THE USER) WHO ARE BECOMING THE OWNER'S OF EACH DEVICE, TO BE ABLE TO REMOVE THE CRAP WE OURSELVES DETERMINE AS SUCH!!
THERE SHOULD BE NO NEED TO ROOT JUST SO WE CAN "uninstall" A SYSTEM APP.
The very Service Agreement & User Manuals explicitly say, "Installation of any app or program outside of the approved & licensed store, may & will nullify any warranty on the device..." Except for 1 particular series of device currently, the only way to match the desired affect is to ignore this warning and/or ROOT.
Either WE the consumer upon purchase own the device therefore can do as we so choose to do, or the time to rewrite the Service Agreement & Manuals has come. The alternative is to encourage 1st the OWNER OF THE DEVICE to ROOT & therefore affect the security. #2 is to encourage those who are creating the various nefarious programs because the security is gone!!
Getting a legitimate "Remove ANY App" program is a much more secure measure as well as encouragement to some entrepreneur to develop a app that can/will do so! Disabled doesn't free that set amount of memory. Modified OS via ROOT/FLASHING is not secure.

For almost every recent Snapdragon devices - Root is a non starter - You can completely disable any System app using Knox keys & appropriate apps - This does not void your warranty & is secure.
Root is only a security risk for those who don't know what they are doing - But in any case - It's academic for the North American Flagship devices.

With or without, if Android is "supposed" to be customizable, would it not be better to decide ourselves if something is "trash" or just acceptable? Ford can recommend a type of oil to use, but why do they get to say that the mechanic at Chevrolet can't replace that with the type selected by the owner of the vehicle? Similarly, a kid is given a blank sheet of paper & a box of crayons to draw whatever... EXCEPT they can only use red green and blue. This is what it's like to deal with bloatware! Having a trusted app that anyone can use regardless of generation or model would therefore be like having a pencil & eraser with a box of paper over a permanent marker with a single piece of paper that has to be shared with family and friends alike in a given area.

We should at least be able to unlock the BL.

Yes I'm in complete agreement with that! Not being able to unlock the bootloader is the equivalent of having a computer where you are unable to use as Administrator when required.
The other thing about Root access - The User can just as easily turn off Root access if needed - The "fly in the ointment" is that Root or even a Custom Recovery will trip Knox...

Root will also invalidate SafetyNet and beeak streaming apps using Widevine. So I can understand that they prevent root. But BL, come on. Exynos has unlocked BL. Snapdragon 0 models (China, LATAM) has unlocked BL too. U and Double-U people are locked yay. Rejoice.
