curious why this may be? I have a work acct tied into the same calendar and wondering if work is blocking it or if it may be bother issue. how do I fix?

Hey @AV1981, could you make sure you have the following enabled?
1. Go to Calendar app
2. Tap 3 dots to "Manage Calendars"
3. Make sure your Samsung account is enabled (checked)

I would also suggest to remove your work email and then re-add it, and also make sure calendar sync is enabled :)

Have you tried using a computer and going to your Gmail calendar settings and check all the sync settings? I had an issue a while back with this and had to sync it first before it would sync on my cell.
