ever since the last Samsung Software Update a few months back, I have been unable to remove apps from my Home Page. if I touch and hold these apps, the cell gives no option to remove them as normally would previous to that Update.
any suggestions or fix? anybody else having this issue?

There are 2 ways to remove apps:
1) Go to apps->settings->apps->choose and tap the app you want to remove->tap uninstall or disable. If you use disable just follow the instructions on the screen.
2) On the app screen press and hold the app and drag it to the top of the screen where there will be an icon with an "x" and cancel or uninstall. Drag the app into the icon you chose.

agreed; both options you mention work. it's removing the 'copy' of the app from my Home Page. I want the app, but just want to remove the copy from my Home Page.
normally to do this you put your finger on the 'copy' and drag it to the X, or garbage can (Delete). BUT, when I put my finger on the copy to drag it to the X or garbage can (Delete), the X or garbage can (Delete) doesn't show up at all. I could keep my finger on that app copy for a minute, 5 minutes or an hour and the the X or garbage can (Delete) never shows up at all for me to drag it over. therefore, I can't get rid of that copy. further, I can't even delete the Home Page it sits on the same way as that the X or garbage can (Delete) doesn't show up for me to drag three page I to to delete it when I put my finger on the page to drag it.

Maybe your default home screen is a third party app instead of stock Samsung? check Settings -> Applications -> Default Apps, and make sure "TouchWiz Home" is selected
