Galaxy SJust switched from a note10+ to a galaxy s20 but the Samsung message app doesn't give the option to use chat. I go to settings and there's no toggle for turning chat on. Not interested in using Google messages, would just like to turn on the chat on this phone.
Everything seems to be fully updated.

Galaxy SWhich Carrier & did you have RCS (Chat) on your Note 10+?
I know that you said you didn't want to use Google Messages, but it seems that there's a growing number of people who are having issues with Samsung's Messaging app.
Samsung's Moderators are advising people to switch to Google's Messaging. It appears that ultimately you won't have the choice, but to use Google Messages anyway.
You said that you looked at the Settings, is there a "chat features" option for you?

Galaxy SHi Mechcook, we are sorry for the experience you had with Samsung messages app.
But we recommend you to use Google messages instead of Samsung messages.
Please download Google messages and set it as a Default messaging app.
Open Google Messages >> Settings >> Toggle ON Chat Features.
Samsung has joined with Google on a common messaging client as default messaging app, Samsung has preloaded Android Messages for default messaging application.
Samsung believes that this change will accelerate RCS(Rich Chatting Service) adoption and help Galaxy users messaging experiences more engaging and delightful.
