Ever since the Oreo update there hasn't been a way to turn off the icon frames. Please give us the option to do so, I really like the TouchWiz launcher but this is making me turn away from it in favor of Nova.

Yeah icon frames is still an option. Did you try typing it into the search bar of settings to find it?

If you have a theme applied from the Samsung Galaxy apps store, it disables the icon frames menu. Turn off any themes, apply the setting and then turn the theme back on and the setting will stick.

I tried this but half of my icons have the adaptive round look and some of them still have the frame. Chrome, Google calendar, gmail, Google Play, Google games.

Yes that's correct. Oreo has changed the way how icons work now. Google apps have managed to use that frame now and there's no way to get rid of that unless you use another launcher like nova. This is unfortunately a feature that's going to stay and mandated by Google to make their OS more like iOS.
