Galaxy SDoesn't need to be corrupted, simply adding a new app to a device's desktop, can shift the position of app's icons on the desktop... unless it's layout is locked.
In fact, the likelihood of any "corruption" during a software update is extremely unlikely.

Galaxy STodd's original question didn't mention either way, as to whether or not they had installed any new apps. It's also possible to inadvertently drag an icon to a different location on the desktop, which is why Locking the Layout is recommended.

Galaxy SHi, if your device is experiencing automatic screen changes despite your settings, try checking for any active screen rotation or adaptive display features.
Additionally, ensure that no third-party apps are interfering with your display settings.
