How do I enable notifications on the black screen;  you know, the dead screen that you have to double-tap to get to the fingerprint icon. I'm a truck driver in a noisy truck and have the phone on a magnet on my dash, and I usually can't hear the little beep, so it would be nice to have the screen light up like my old iphone did.

If your device model supports it, Always On Display can display Notifications when they arrive.

Go to Settings > Lock Screen & Touch Always On Display, which will take you to the 2nd screen shot, where you can select the Notifications to appear.

Thanks for the quick reply, but wouldn't 'always on display' eat up more battery?

Disregard that last post.... I followed your instructions and saw what you meant. Thanks again
