I get really frustrated when apps need access to my contacts or my phone or whatever in order for them to work properly. My question is: why in the hell does any app need those permissions? Can anyone give me a reasonable explanation?

certain apps like what's app or face book or apps like that need permission to certain things like mic or photos etc etc for them to work other apps like weather apps or Google need permission for gps reasons and any more are the same...

Applications have been doing this for ages, did you know games like fruit ninja used to request access to GPS, call log, file system, phone and SMS, and contacts. You're probably wondering why in the world would a game about cutting fruit would need this information. The answer lies with mobile advertisements and app revenue, This information is usually sent to third party companies who use that data for targetted ads which translates to revenue for the app developer who release the app for "free". To combat this, ever since the introduction of android 7.0, apps now need to declare when a permission is needed which is why you see those "allow/deny" notifications.
