Hi,

As the title suggests, I'm just curious. How do other Galaxy smartphones detect a Smarttag and relay information of the tag's location back to Smartthings Find? Does it require Bluetooth to be turned on in order for this to work? I'm curious about how it would work because I'm guessing most Galaxy smartphone users have Bluetooth disabled majority of the time.

For context, I'm asking because have two Galaxy Smarttags and haven't been able to properly test them and couldn't find information anywhere about how the tag detection works. I will be travelling in the coming months and hope to bring a Smarttag to track the location of my luggage before and after my flight. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

hi.. i have smart tags.. 2 regular and 2 plus... yup pairing it will need bluetooth on.. and if you will check on it if its near you via smarthings app your bluetooth will turn on automatically..

if its away from you.. and you wanna check where it is.. as far as i know if somebody who is using samsung phone walks by near it that it will send a ping on its location.

i used it flyjng back home and it works good.. the tag + i put it on my nephew and niece as their necklace just a precaution if something happens... if you have any more questions about it,feel free to ask here. Have a great day..

I have two tags currently, one on my keys and one in the car and connected to my S20 and I'm thinking of buying at least one more for my luggage but what I'm just not sure if it still pings off someone else's Samsung phone if they have bluetooth turned off. Do you know if there's a way to temporarily prevent my phone from pinging to the tags to test if it pings off other Samsung phones?

try bringing the other tags somewhere far from you... or let a friend from different house test it. bring the tag there then when you get home check if you can see the tags on the app

Yes it requires Bluetooth for short range find
You can look up on Samsung support for the devices to learn about how it works

Hi Danyboy191, SmartTags communicate with your Galaxy smartphone or tablet using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and have a maximum connection range of 120 metres.

If your SmartTag is outside of this range, you can still locate it using offline finding in SmartThings Find.

SmartThings Find uses other users Galaxy devices, in the Galaxy Find Network, to help you locate your SmartTag, making sure that your valuables can be found no matter where they are.

Somewhere in the settings, there is an option in that says 'allow scanning of wifi and Bluetooth even when these modules are turned off'. Enabling this allows for a lot of creepy things, and SmartTags likely takes advantage of it. Just a hunch though.

Just wondering: where do you find the option that says "allow scanning of wifi and Bluetooth even when these modules are turned off"? Is it somewhere within the Smarthings app?

Why isn't anyone answering danboys questions. I would like to know too..

He is asking if other users that pass by with their galaxy phones. Do they need to have their Bluetooth turned on in order to ping the location. Or does it do it automatically on their phone in the background?
