Are you using Gestures or "Buttons"?

I use Gestures and don't have any issues exiting any of my apps.

As for the colour of folders, I believe that you can use GoodLock's Home Up to change the appearance of Folders etc.

I use Nova Launcher & you can have pretty much anything you want.

If everything is working fine on your brother's device, I'd suggest you see if Booting into Recovery & Wiping Cache resolves the issue for you.

Instructions on how to Wipe Cache:

1) Turn off the device.

2) Press and hold the Volume Up key and the spower button.

3) When you feel the phone vibrate, release both buttons.

You'll see the Recovery Menu.

4) Press the Volume down key to navigate and select "Wipe cache partition".

5) Press Power key to select. When the wipe cache partition is complete, it will default to Reboot System.

6) Press the Power key to restart the device.

If you're using a case, it's possible that the case is interfering with the Swipe up Gestures.

I'm using a Spigen Tough Armor case & I had to adjust the Swipe Up size. Before I did, it felt like the Swipe wasn't working properly, but I knew it was the case causing it.

If you are using a case, go to Settings > Display > Navigation > Gestures > More Options & Slide it all the way to the Right.
