OthersAre you using Gestures or "Buttons"?
I use Gestures and don't have any issues exiting any of my apps.
As for the colour of folders, I believe that you can use GoodLock's Home Up to change the appearance of Folders etc.
I use Nova Launcher & you can have pretty much anything you want.

OthersIf everything is working fine on your brother's device, I'd suggest you see if Booting into Recovery & Wiping Cache resolves the issue for you.

OthersIf you're using a case, it's possible that the case is interfering with the Swipe up Gestures.
I'm using a Spigen Tough Armor case & I had to adjust the Swipe Up size. Before I did, it felt like the Swipe wasn't working properly, but I knew it was the case causing it.
If you are using a case, go to Settings > Display > Navigation > Gestures > More Options & Slide it all the way to the Right.
See if that works for you?
