Phone vs Gmail Contacts

So my  phone has seemed to download my Gmail contact and linked them.  I don't want it to.  Isn't this required or can I safely delete all the phone contacts and simply display Gmail contacts?

Open your Contacts > Click on the 3 Dot Menu (yours will appear differently than mine) > Select Contacts saved to Phone > Select ALL and Delete.
