Here's the official response from @SamsungSteve from ask an expert awhile back:

"Samsung globally supports 2 major releases on a flagship/S series device. We continue to support the SMRs and QMRs for 2 additional years beyond the major OS. In total, software support for a flagship model is 4 years."

The 8 series flagship received their 2 OS upgrades (Oreo and Pie). I guess on a brighter note, they will still continue to receive security updates.

I wouldn't. I had an iphone for 3 days and had to go back to my android. never again. it is definitely not for me. love my android
