Did you check if you had Do Not Disturb or if you are on Vibrate/Mute?

Go to Messages/Settings/Notifications/New Messages and check what the notification sound is set to.

I have a new S20 and I'm not getting any sound when I get new messages. It vibrates and I have checked to make sure that notification is on.

Hi FearYYZ,

Please follow the below steps and get back to us with the result:
Open Settings >> Touch Notifications >> Touch an app (select an app which you want to change notification settings) and select an option:
• Allow notifications: Receive notifications from this app.
• Show silently: Do not make a sound or vibrate and blow previews in pop-ups.
• On lock screen: Allow or hide notifications on the lock screen.
• Set as priority: Allow notifications from this app to sound and turn on the screen while Do not disturb mode is turned on.

Thanks for your help. I went back to the Samsung store where I bought it and a young man there helped get it working.
