Galaxy SNothing to do with any updates. Sounds like you need to get your carrier to give you a new SIM. Hopefully it's just a SIM card issue & not a SIM slot issue.
Was your phone exposed to any moisture recently?
You can also go to the Interactive tests on Samsung Members & test the SIM for confirmation of any issues with it, but it's definitely not related to the update.
As for Chrome & Email issues, you should probably wipe cache for both of those & it SHOULD resolve the problem.
If you received an Android version update, then I would backup with smart switch & factory reset, but the SIM issue isn't related to any Android version update either.

Galaxy SI've never had any issues with the SIM after any update, so I'm very confident in saying that the update has nothing to do with the SIM error. It's quite possible that the SIM is working, but is on the verge of failure. Your carrier should give you a new SIM for free.
There's absolutely no reason why any update would even touch the SIM.
You could always boot into recovery & wipe cache, but I doubt that will fix any SIM errors permanently, if at all.

Galaxy SHi Lara, Please verify the SIM card as mentioned by RedDogRabbit using the Samsung members app by following the path below.
Open Samsung Members app >> Get Help >> Interactive Checks >> SIM card.
If possible, I suggest you please also check the sim card on another device.
