So I am a bit confused about how the updates get rolled out. I'm in Canada using Koodo. I purchased my device flat out from best buy not through a carrier. Are unlocked devices not purchased through carries supposed to get updates differently? I am under the impression that a device purchased from a carrier follows the carrier schedule. But it seems I still have to follow the carrier schedule even though I didn't get mine through a carrier. Correct me if I'm wrong. Thank you.

There is no real unlocked version in Canada. Even if you buy it full price at bestbuy or Samsung Canada's website or anywhere else, the very first sim card you install into the device, it will install the carrier's stuff and the device will belong to that carrier.

Carriers do not update at the same time
and @Deeezzyy is right,
i think the sim card you get is your carrier and your device will follow their update schedule ✌️

That's pretty stupid. So the only real advantage of getting unlocked is a slightly cheaper rate plan

Agreed 🤙
you have the ability to change carriers on the fly for better rate plans🤷
If there is something else or benefit to having an unlocked device...
Someone please enlighten us 😉 🤗

Like @mytech says, you have the advantage to have better deal with providers..
When you see a deal, give a call to your provider and ask him to do better..normally they can...

Also, when you rent/buy a phone with a provider, they make you accept some plans and you can't change it without having to pay something...you're better when it's yours, No contract for years, possibility to change your phone anytime etc

I gave up waiting for an update to my galaxy A51 which apparently already happened but I never got it, so I just got a new phone that came with the updates.
Seemed easier than waiting for Samsung to be reliable
