Samsung is releasing a software patch to fix fingerprint issues on Galaxy Note10, Note10+, S10, S10+ and S10 devices. If you have registered a fingerprint on one of these devices, you will receive a notification with instructions on how to update. This update is being sent out gradually, so you may not receive the notification immediately.

Reported Issue
If you have used a screen protector, such as a silicone cover with a textured surface on the inside, the screen cover may have interfered with your fingerprint scan (for example, the texture itself may be recognized as a fingerprint that can unlock your phone).

Update Instructions
1. Once you receive an update notification titled Biometrics update, tap Update.

  1. After the update is complete, restart your phone.
  2. If you’ve used front screen covers in the past, remove all fingerprints from your phone and register them again without a cover applied.

This update contains important improvements to your device’s fingerprint recognition. Samsung strongly recommends that users refrain from using non-OEM screen protectors, such as silicone covers with textured surfaces inside. Once updated, please be sure to re-scan your fingerprint in its entirety, so that all portions of your fingerprint, including the center and corners have been fully scanned.

Samsung takes the security of our products very seriously, and we strive to continuously test and improve our biometric authentication features. Please contact Samsung Customer Support if you have any questions or concerns.

    Thank you.

Frequently Asked Questions:

I have not received any notifications for a new software patch.
Please note that the notification will be sent gradually only to customers that have fingerprints registered on their phone. Notifications will not be sent if fingerprints have not been registered. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

I cannot clear the software update notification on my device.
We highly recommend installing the update as it contains important improvements to your fingerprint scanner. Please note that the notification cannot be removed until the update is installed.

Why do I need to re-register my fingerprint after the update is complete?
If you have used a screen protective cover in the past, the fingerprints registered on your device may contain incorrect fingerprint information. If you do not delete them and re-register your fingerprint, they may reproduce the recognition issue after the update. If you have registered fingerprints on your device with a screen protector on, or have used the fingerprint scanner with a screen protector on, please delete all previous fingerprints and re-register your fingerprints without the screen protector on.

Ah great, this will be sent the same way as the fingerprint update for the S10 series earlier this year, through an "Urgent Update" prompt that bypasses carriers' unnecessary testing.

Excuse me, for curiosity. Why only people using FP will get the update? Why is not for everyone include people not using FP. What if someone decided to use the FP after a year?

But now I know why I have no issue. Cause my screen protect does not have patterns. Lucky 😅

@Tallman I suspect that Samsung's immediate concern is for people who are currently using Finger Prints & That's why only those will receive the "hotfix" - I'm sure that the balance will receive the Patch as part of the regular OTAs 🐧
