Go to the playstore and get Day Widget. It's the best replacement i could find and it works exactly how you want. Opens your calendar. I do believe you should make it never sleep in dev. management but it consumes very little resources and you can now have the date icon with any theme. There was only ONE theme i ever tried that allowed the icon to change daily. pumpkin or something in the name. dark theme. but when i did a trial of just the icons it didn't work. themegalaxy for custom themes is the way to go. 1 dollar...
