Cassidy asked me for this, so I remade the, er, "comparison" Samsung's marketing did to give a fuller and less biased view of the situation. By "less biased", I mean that the original infographic has put all the Note10+ specs in grey, regardless of equality (or even superiority).

Anyway, here you go:

Comparaison N10PN20U.png

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

Ultra Wide Angle (0.5x Mode)--

While the N10P offers more pixels in 0.5x mode, the N20U offers bigger ones. The upshot is that the N20U will offer slightly less detailed scenes, although with better quality in low-light scenes. We're not talking about a revolutionary change, both will struggle a bit in low light regardless in 0.5x.

Regular Wide Mode (1x)--

The Note10+ has the advantage here thanks to its variable aperture and the usage of a standard bayer sensor instead of the "Nonacell" one used on the N20U. You'll probably tell me about the 108MP count, to which I reply that not only is this mode completely inadequate for everything you'll ever do with your pics*, it's also a huge storage drain. Best not to mention the energy required to parse the file. The processing to a "standard" picture results in information (thus quality) loss. Most people won't notice it though, especially without a reference picture. In the end, you'll always shoot in 12MP mode, so forget the 108MP figure ever existed.

In any case, the variable aperture gives the N10+ versatility. Indeed, it gives greater adaptability according to the shooting situation. Bright daylight shots won't be overexposed, and night shots will be more detailed. No in-between like the N20U.

Telephoto--

You might think I'm completely anti-Note20U at this point, as this comparison so far isn't kind to the brand's newest shiny. The telephoto is where the Note20U is finally going to get praises. The Note10+ settles for a 12MP 2x true optical zoom. Not bad, not bad at all. That's more than you could say for the S20, S20+ and the base Note20, all of which settled for cropping a 64MP image instead. The N20U here brings a true 5x optical zoom. That's more than the S20U! That's a significant improvement over the previous model's 2x-only state. I guess I could bring things down by mentioning that due to the much smaller aperture size, it will be very hard to use it at night (harder than the 2x N10+), but zooms aren't known to be the most reliable lenses at night anyway.

* At this resolution, the majority of the pixels will be wasted. If you had hopes of taking awesome 108MP vacation pics to make a huge print later, you better not. You'll only end up with Gibibytes of okay-ish pics. Stick with 12MP to take awesome 12MP shots instead. Or if all you want is to post on social media, your stuff will be badly compressed anyway, so those megapixels are all wasted too.

PS: I insist on using the U instead of Ultra because the rationale of using Ultra instead of + doesn't make sense. Well, maybe to marketing...

Good comparison post.

For N20U, wide 108MP / F1.8, isn't better than N10P 12MP / F1.5-F2.4 ?

Why 108MP will not look good?

F1.8 means it's not as bright as the N10P in low light, while being too bright in sunlight.
And 108MP uses super small pixels at 0.8um. These pixels, being smaller, will all have less light, which means more noise than if these pixels were merged together. Unless it's a perfect sunny day outside and that there's not a lot of shadows in the picture. 12MP remains a better choice overall

I see. 🙂

Why does Samsung goes with Nanocell if at the end it's not better ?
I agree than the 2 apertures F 1.5 and 2.4 are better but...

The 9x improvement figure is factual... against non-binned modes of itself. Light sensitivity still depends on individual pixel size. But then the guy didn't realize that "no detail loss" should not be compared to lower-res pics. That's not what lossless means, like not at all.

Though you want to know why? Because 108MP means WOWOWOWOW to non-knowledgeable buyers

How dare you create a beautiful chart with really fancy graphics 🙃 (I'm kidding, love the 2D Note20U!)

The N20U graphic isn't mine, it's the official one. I probably could have upscaled it like I did for the rest.

ahh, I see. Still gotta compliment the chart though, the gradients are gorgeous.

Hi CHMultimedia,

Thank you for showing the detailed Camera comparison of Samsung Galaxy Note 10 plus and Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

After listening to consumers and based on internal usage evaluation, we decided to remove the Depth vision Camera for the Galaxy Note20 series to stay true to our priority to enhance the core features we know our consumers love most. Galaxy Note20 Ultra includes new camera enhancements and a suite of pro-grade video tools that allow you to capture and create an amazing video of your best memories.

We also applied a Laser AF sensor to Galaxy Note20 Ultra for a faster and more accurate Auto Focus experience.
