Galaxy SHi ajDilligaf,
You need to open your device Settings, not Samsung notes settings.
From a Home screen, navigate: Settings >> Apps >> then Search and select the Samsung Notes >> Click on Storage >> Click on Clear cache.
Note: Do not clear the data of the app. Clearing the data will reset the app to factory default settings. Any personal settings saved on the app will be removed.
I hope this will help you understand better.

Galaxy SSorry, been too long in getting back to you both, but it's been, well, confusing to say the least!
I've been trying to update my Notes app, and just today the system, and getting nowhere! I can get to you, Twitter even, but it won't let me download. Check out the pic. Anyway, I just deleted the "blank" note and redid it, but can't update my phone it seems 😔. It's the 1st time this has happened but, tried several times, restarted the phone.. nothing worked. I'm done in with this phone!

Galaxy SHi ajDilligaf,
Thanks for your response. Please reboot your device once and check for the software update under phone settings.
As per the information under Software update, downloading via mobile networks may result in additional charges. I suggest you to try download the update over a WiFi network and check if it works.

Galaxy SI don't understand what happened but I've done the download!! I don't have access to wifi at the farm so that's not an option. I'm lucky if I get service at all..
However, yesterday I was in town, started with about 98% battery and depleted it trying to get the update. I did restart and reboot the phone and that did nothing. However, I went home, plugged it in to recharge.. then the download worked!?!
Have no idea why that happened but, I'll take the result.
Thanks ever so for your support!
Have a good one, and stay healthy.
