Galaxy SHi LadyofLeisure, If you wish to set an Audio or music file as a Message notification or ringtone, the audio file must be placed into the Notifications or Ringtone folder.
Using Saved Music files: Open My Files app >> Tap on Audio >> Select Music >> long-press the music file to select then either tap on Move or Copy >> Head back to the My File main page and select Internal storage >> Select Notifications >> Tap on Copy here to copy your music file into your Notifications folder.
Now you will be able to set the Voice Recording/Downloaded music files as the Notification tone. Follow the below steps:
Head into your Settings >> Sounds and vibration >> Tap on Notification sounds >> Select your Music file then tap on the back button to apply changes >> The selected Audio file has now been successfully set as your Notification Sound.
If you are unable to hear your Notification sounds, ensure you have set your Sound Mode has been set to Sound. You can check by heading into your Settings > Sounds and Vibrations > Sound Mode > Sound.
Customize Individual App Notifications Tones
Settings > Apps >> Tap on an app you would like to customize the Notification tone >> Tap on Notifications >> Select a category you would like to customize>> Ensure that you have selected Alert then tap on Sound >> Tap on a sound(Select Notification sound) then press the back button to apply changes.
Note: If you would like to use your own music file other than the pre-loaded sounds, follow steps of "Using saved Music Files" to transfer your music files into your Notifications Folder.
You can also follow the options provided by jayman1973.
Thanks, jayman1973, for sharing the information.

Galaxy SHi LadyofLeisure,
You are welcome and I am not sure but from third-party websites, you can download and save it in your device and follow the above steps to keep it as a notification or ring tone.
Or just record the audio file and copy your music file/Audio recording(using voice recorder) into your Notifications folder and set it as your desired tune. Get back to us after performing the above steps.
I hope it will help you.
