Once again Samsung really knows how to wreck your day....

I've had my phone for almost a year, when I put in the original SIM the phone did a reset. Apparently this is by design, and in multiple places Samsung says this will never happen again.

Well it did.  I put on another carrier's SIM in my phone and it factory reset.

How am I supposed to swap a SIM out without losing my data.

I know no one from Samsung will respond because they dont gove a **bleep**.

Hey @naten,

That's definitely super frustrating and I'm really sorry you had to go through that:(

Can you share your phones model number, as well as any additional details about what happened(any pop ups or messages)? Ill escalate this for you and we'll see where it goes.

Let me know!

Cheers,

Jeremy

it's an SM-G960W

the phone was originally initialized with a fido sim, I've had the phone more than a year.

I put in a Roger's SIM, and without warning the phone shut down and said "erasing data".

then it came up factory.

for the life of me I cannot think of a reason why a warning would not be generated, if it's the first time or anytime. you should have to confirm you want to proceed with wiping a device.

frustrating isnt really even the word. these devices are trusted with our data these days. and now a lot of it is gone since I backed up a week ago.

not to mention it takes hours to put a phone back to production.

even the Google backup failed to restore. no doubt it is conflicting with Samsungs backup service, which also is flakey.

there is seriously something wrong with Samsungs QA/QC if this is one of its best products.

I will rephrase my idea...When you bought your device and put the Sim card, you'd probably have Android Oreo 8 on it...if your device got a Android update and if you are now on Android Pie 9 and you put again the Sim card, maybe it's why everything was erased , so my question is : Could it be becaue the Android Version is different than your problem happened ?... or it's because you change Carrier... anyway in both situation it's a horrible situation...
(sorry for my english..i know it's bad)

I'm sorry I don't remember what was loaded on the phone when I purchased it.

regardless, it really shouldnt matter. there is no documentation saying the phone will reset if you change to a different sim after the first time you put one in.

Seem very strange for me. I live in Québec 6 months a year and in Thailand the other 6 months. I've been doing this for 8 years. I could say that I have many complaints about Samsung and its bad habit of providing multiple firmware around. But reset after changing sim card looks strange to me.
Good luck for this one.

Your phone switched CSC from fido to Rogers and to do so it factory resets. Carriers related features like wifi calling and RCS are determined by CSC and for them to work, your phone switches to CSC of the SIM card inserted. This doesn't happen automatically if SIM cards are from different country.
I know it is extremely annoying when this happens. I switch from telus to bell and just like any other user would, I inserted my sim card at the bell store which triggered factory reset.
There should be a warning from phone instead of automatically triggering factory resetting and switching CSC should totally be done at users convenience.

all of Samsungs documentation says that should only happen the first time you put a SIM in, regardless of what the next sim you put in. if you have any links to information about why samsung would have this happen by design please share.

I have never heard that it would do that if the next sim is from the same country. I dont even know how a phone would be able to distinguish that.

I have NEVER seen this behaviour before.

I just tested it on an S7 and S8 and it does not reset. I also tested it on another S9 with a Bell sim and put a fido sim and it also did not reset.

I am glad that there is confirmation this is happening to people though. this is a nightmare.

I travel and switch sims a lot, I cant be worried that evertime I do this I won't have a phone.

my next phone will not be a samsung, you pay a premium for a bad experience.

not exactly the same but just found this on another Canadian S9:

if my phone resets just by turning roaming on I would loose my mind.
