Apple is updating their 5s, which is like 5 years old. They're also updating iPhone 6 and making it actually faster, like 40% in some cases.

Certainly Samsung can do same. Give S6 android 8.0, remove non essential items, and make it faster!

Honestly we pay so much for Samsung devices. $1000 for S8 vs iPhone 8, but Apple has so much better support (updates, phone or call), service (many stores, same hour replacement and cheap warranties $29 fix), Samsung should be above and push android 8.0 to a 3 year old smartphone.

I don't own S6, but in I don't want my S9 to be outdated in 3 years from now. I've S7 and A7 and it's bad that this year is their last update. The A7 basically gets one update, since it came out with outdated OS (nougat, when Oreo was out for long).

Edit: I also want to add that many people get phones year after release. We're still getting deals on s8. It's unfortunate that these people will only get update for 1 year. So yes, make 3 year OS updates and 4 year security update. We can't afford to throw away phones after 3 years!!! I tend to give away phone afterwards, so it's sad the phone is useless for people who need security update.

Edit 2: I'm talking about S6 getting Oreo, not s4 getting android p. Let's start talking about updating 3 year old phone first and then 4 or 5 year old.

Yes exactly and it's still a classic designed phone with a home button and you still have the option of not getting a edge screen with it. It's like the perfect Samsung phone. Still a 3000 mAH battery which is the same as S8 and S9. I don't see any reason of upgrading.

I wish they would at least support devices for 3 years. Hopefully with Samsung experience now being a thing any device with SE can get SE updates instead of Android updates when they aren't supported.

Like MIUI? Interesting. They did release MIUI 9 (The overlay for Nougat) on their Mi 1S, released IN 2012.

However the base Android is still KitKat and patch is Oct 2016. Why not give a better patch altogether? No one will ever know

I don't really care for OS updates. I would much prefer security updates for at least 4-5 years. I still have a functioning Note 2 that is lacking the latest important security patches. I don't care about getting a new OS and just want basic security support. Is that really too much to ask for?

Yup I absolutely agree that Samsung should continue to provide the Security Patch updates! That's what the lawsuit in the Netherlands was all about... Very disappointing that Samsung chose to fight against it - Worse that they won.. Shame on Samsung for that.

Yes. Security is very important. Can live without P but not without security.

@Yoshi... Whatever - Go get yourself an iPhone 5s or Flash a Custom Rom on your S4... BUT just STOP trying to justify Android P on the S4!

Also Yoshi you must take into account Qualcomm. They did not provide Nougat drivers for the SD801/800/805. Without these, cannot update. Same for the SD600 in the S4. So even IF, and that's a huge IF, they wanted to update the S4 to Android P, they cannot do that without having a resulting unstable OS with huge performance issues

We're not asking s4 to be updated. We know apple has more control over hardware and software. But forget s4, why s5 isn't getting security update? Why isn't S6 getting Oreo? Why A7 only gets one update (it comes with old software)

Samsung has to many phones to keep pace with iPhone for updates and security patches, and like so many people on this forum say, Samsung has a business to run how can they update old phones and make money? I agree software update and security patches are huge and very important, but it all comes down to Samsung caring about building a product that would be able to support 4 years updates and 5 year security patches, if Samsung cared about this I am sure they would do it, you can see they don't. Maybe one day in the future they will make a device that has support 4 years or even 5, but right now Samsung objectives are clear, sell the most phones, make the most amount of money from the smartphone market well its popular and to try to be the best in this market, but right now you can clearly see that samsung doesn't care about updates or security patches for all their devices, I guess how could they with so many devices being made by them. So you have to make better decisions with your money and that can be your voice to samsung, if updates and security patches are important to you Samsung is not that company to provide long term support for old devices, your best bet is either a Google device that is android or iPhone that is Apple, but to be far Samsung is third best for updating there new device's, also to make one more point it is possible that Apple feels threatened by Android advancements in this market and they are trying there best to keep all there customers by updating a device as old as a iphone 5s as a desperate attempt, to buy them time.
